About 10 years ago I was working for a niche-business publishing house affiliated to The Telegraph Group, and my role was to call up pensions firms and major insurance handlers and invite them to participate in our ‘Thought Leadership’ campaigns.


The offer combined magazine coverage plus video editorial filmed on the main floor of The Daily Telegraph.  Other sectors we ran parallel campaigns for included pharmaceuticals, biotech, digital transformation, credit risk finance, freight & logistics, green technologies, and HR & recruitment, and needless to say an intense buzz surrounded these projects.


The initiative targeted industry individuals looking to bolster their standing, to become the ‘Go-To’ – this is the essence of Thought Leadership, perhaps the best ‘soft sell’ marketing strategy of them all.  However, while each person had the requisite years of hard-earned experience, the degree of presentational fluidity ranged from naturally magnetic to expected nerves seizing up once cameras roll.  As project manager, and in collaboration with a seasoned film crew, I would coach each speaker to the point where no one would even notice anymore – the camera can be your friend if you know how to let it be. What mattered was shooting great content, then run it through your edit suite and polish it like a diamond.


We ran these campaigns for three years, before I left to return home to Northampton and eventually establishing my own Video Marketing Agency.  The experience – from the initial booking the client, coordinating on script, attending filming, and overseeing the edit – taught me so much, not least the variety of specialisms throughout industry and commerce. It was very enjoyable.
